9:00 a.m. (Mississippi time).

Dr. Barksdale, Mom’s heart doctor, talked to us an hour ago. He is surprised Mom is still hanging in there. He did not expect her to make it through the weekend.

She did not have a single heart failure yesterday or last night.

We have spent the last hour talking to Mom about her grandfather, Jose Jimenez, who spent most of his life traveling the world on a merchant ship.

“When I was a little girl, I was always excited every time his ship would come to New Orleans, because he would stay with us and give us gifts from some exotic place on the other side of the world. He always had people with him who could not speak English, so he had to tell us what they were saying. He was a good looking man with black wavy hair who seemed to speak every language. I took him to school with me to tell my class about his travels. . .”

I guess that’s where I got the urge to travel the world.

No matter how many times I hear her old stories, they are always interesting and fresh. I will miss hearing them.
