Wide awake at 5:00 a.m., again. The blessing of jetlag . . . Matthew 18:1 records one of those questions that I imagine the disciples wish they had never asked. Obsessed with their own status, position, and self-importance, they asked a question that should have had an obvious answer. “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Let’s see, is it Peter? John? Andrew? Jesus? Not sure. Let’s ask. As always, Jesus’ answer was both creative and gracious. He called a little child to stand among them, then told his self-absorbed disciples, “unless you change” you will not be debating which one of you is the greatest in the kingdom, “you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” While they were wondering which of them might win the MVP, Jesus warned them they may not even make the roster. What did Jesus mean by that “unless you change” statement? Verse 4 gives a hint: “whoever HUMBLES HIMSELF like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” They were interested in greatness; Jesus was interested in humility. Disciples: the same yesterday, today, forever.
